Krishna Amavasya

What Is Amavasya (New Moon) and What Is It For?

Amavasya is the fifteenth lunar day of the waning fortnight, the new moon, when the moon is not visible. It is traditionally associated with the Pitrs (ancestors) and is the principal day for ancestral remembrance and tarpana. Named observances include Mauni Amavasya (a day of silence in Magha), Mahalaya Amavasya (the close of the fortnight for the ancestors), and Diwali, which falls on the Amavasya of Kartik. The new moon is treated as a quiet, inward turn of the cycle. On Sadhaka, Amavasya is a monthly marker for stillness and remembrance rather than a forecast.
