Translation

But beyond this lower nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, know My other, higher nature (para prakriti), which consists of living beings by which this universe is sustained.

Multi-Tradition Commentary

Ramanuja (Vishishtadvaita)

The individual souls (jīvas) are the higher nature of Ishvara—they are sentient, capable of experience and liberation. While the lower prakriti is inert, this higher nature is the experiencer. Both are real manifestations of Brahman, yet the jīva's relationship with Ishvara is one of inseparable dependence (apṛthak-siddhi).

Practical Application (Modern Life)

You are not the inert body-mind but the conscious experiencer—the para prakriti of the Divine. Cultivate this understanding in daily life: act from the awareness of being a conscious self rather than from identification with material processes. This shift from body-consciousness to soul-consciousness is itself a spiritual practice.
