Translation
“Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence, and ego—these eight constitute My separated lower nature (apara prakriti).”
Multi-Tradition Commentary
The five great elements (pañca mahābhūtas) together with the three inner instruments (antaḥkaraṇa)—mind, intellect, and ego—form the apara (lower) prakriti of the Lord. Everything in the material cosmos is a permutation of these eight. Knowing this, the wise do not mistake the world for anything other than Brahman's own nature.
Practical Application (Modern Life)
When you feel identified with the body, emotions, or thoughts, recall that all of these—including the ego that claims ownership—are simply aspects of Krishna's lower nature. This philosophical reframe loosens the grip of excessive self-identification and invites a sense of wonder at the Divine play within you.
