श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् | स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः || ३५ ||
śreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ para-dharmāt sv-anuṣṭhitāt sva-dharme nidhanaṁ śreyaḥ para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ
śreyān—far better; sva-dharmaḥ—one's own occupation; viguṇaḥ—imperfectly performed; para-dharmāt—than another's duty; sv-anuṣṭhitāt—perfectly performed; sva-dharme—in one's own duty; nidhanam—destruction; śreyaḥ—better; para-dharmaḥ—duty meant for another; bhayāvahaḥ—dangerous.
“Better is one's own dharma, though imperfectly performed, than the dharma of another perfectly performed. Better is death in one's own dharma; the dharma of another is fraught with danger.”
Sva-dharma is not merely social duty but the expression of one's own deepest nature and capacity. To abandon one's authentic path in favour of another's — however impressive — creates a fundamental inauthenticity that ultimately corrupts. Imperfect authenticity is more spiritually generative than perfect imitation. The 'danger' in para-dharma is not just social harm but the subtle violence of self-betrayal.
Resist the cultural pressure to imitate paths that do not match your nature, even when those paths appear more glamorous or successful. Your specific combination of talents, tendencies, and circumstances constitutes your unique dharma. Fulfil it faithfully — imperfectly if necessary — rather than performing a role that belongs to another. Authenticity, however humble, is the firmest ground.
