दण्डो दमयतामस्मि नीतिरस्मि जिगीषताम् | मौनं चैवास्मि गुह्यानां ज्ञानं ज्ञानवतामहम् || ३८ ||
daṇḍo damayatām asmi nītir asmi jigīṣatām maunaṁ caivāsmi guhyānāṁ jñānaṁ jñānavatām aham
daṇḍaḥ—punishment; damayatām—of all means of repression; asmi—I am; nītiḥ—morality; asmi—I am; jigīṣatām—of those who seek victory; maunam—silence; ca—also; eva—certainly; asmi—I am; guhyānām—of secrets; jñānam—knowledge; jñānavatām—of the wise; aham—I am.
“Of all means of suppression I am just punishment; of those seeking victory I am morality. Of secrets I am silence; of the wise I am wisdom itself.”
Silence (maunam) is identified as the greatest of secrets — the secret that contains all other secrets. The deepest truths of spiritual experience are beyond the reach of words; they can only be transmitted and received in the intimacy of shared silence. The Upanishadic teaching 'neti, neti' (not this, not this) ultimately points to this silence as the resting place of knowing.

Set aside time each day for silent sitting — not as a deprivation but as an exploration of what the mind discovers when the constant stream of words is temporarily stilled.
