What is Seva?

सेवा (Seva)Selfless Service

Action performed in a spirit of service without egoic expectation of reward or recognition.

Deep Understanding

Seva is the expression of spiritual understanding through action. It is service offered to the Divine, the Guru, the community, or any being in need, without self-centered calculation. While it can look outwardly simple, its inner power lies in reducing ego, softening self-importance, and transforming work into offering.

Seva is closely tied to Karma Yoga and Bhakti. It translates abstract ideals such as Dharma, devotion, and non-attachment into lived conduct and is widely honored across Hindu, Sikh, and service-oriented spiritual traditions.

Core Principles

  • 1Service without egoic transaction
  • 2Seeing the Divine in others
  • 3Action as offering rather than possession
  • 4Humility, responsibility, and compassion in practice

In Practice
