What is Dharma?
धर्म (Dharma) — Righteousness / Duty / Cosmic Order
Deep Understanding
Dharma is a complex concept with multiple meanings depending on the context. At a cosmic level, it refers to the eternal laws that maintain the harmony of the universe (Sanatana Dharma). At an individual level, it means one's righteous duty, virtue, and right way of living. It is what upholds, supports, or maintains the regulatory order of the universe.
Dharma is the first of the four Purusharthas (aims of human life), preceding Artha (wealth), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation). It provides the ethical framework within which the other aims should be pursued.
Core Principles
- 1Sva-dharma: personal duty based on one's nature and stage of life
- 2Sanatana-dharma: eternal, universal laws and values
- 3Action aligned with cosmic harmony
- 4The foundation of ethical living
