What is Bindu?
बिन्दु (Bindu) — Point / Seed
Deep Understanding
Bindu is conceptually staggering: it is the point of origin that has no dimensions itself, but contains all potential dimensions. In sacred geometry (Yantras), the central dot where the practitioner completely focuses their attention is the Bindu. In Tantric anatomy, it is the center of the thousand-petaled lotus (Sahasrara) where the cosmos collapses back into a single point of unmanifest reality before returning to Shiva. It is the ultimate singularity—the point where time and space cease, and pure consciousness remains alone.
Fundamental to Tantra, Yantra geometry, and Kashmir Shaivism. The journey of the yogi is to trace back the expansive, scattered nature of their worldly mind (the circumference) backward to the single, dense point of origin (Bindu).
Core Principles
- 1All creation explodes outward from this central point of pure potential
- 2All meditation ultimately collapses inward back to this single point
- 3It represents the end of duality and multiplicity
- 4In human anatomy, it is frequently associated with the center of the head
In Practice
When overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks or distractions in your life, recognize that you are living entirely on the chaotic circumference of a circle. Deliberately pull your attention inward. Focus completely on a single, tiny, indivisible point—a mantra syllable, or the very tip of an incense flame—until the circumference drops away.
