मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्किञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय | मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव || ७ ||
mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñcid asti dhanañjaya mayि sarvam idaṁ protaṁ sūtre maṇi-gaṇā iva
mattaḥ—beyond Me; para-taram—superior; na—not; anyat—anything else; kiñcit—something; asti—there is; dhanañjaya—O conqueror of wealth (Arjuna); mayi—in Me; sarvam—all; idam—this; protam—strung; sūtre—on a thread; maṇi-gaṇāḥ—pearls; iva—like.
“There is nothing whatsoever higher than Me, O conqueror of wealth. All this is strung on Me like clusters of gems on a thread.”
The image of gems on a thread is profound: the gems are visible, distinct, and beautiful—yet without the thread they scatter and have no unity. Brahman is the invisible thread of pure Consciousness that runs through every name and form, giving them coherence. Remove any gem and the thread remains; remove the thread and nothing holds.
In your relationships, projects, and experiences, practise seeing the connecting principle—the awareness in which all events occur. When things seem fragmented or overwhelming, return to the 'thread': the silent witness-consciousness that is always present and undisturbed.
