इच्छाद्वेषसमुत्थेन द्वन्द्वमोहेन भारत | सर्वभूतानि सम्मोहं सर्गे यान्ति परन्तप || २७ ||
icchā-dveṣa-samutthena dvandva-mohena bhārata sarva-bhūtāni sammohaṁ sarge yānti parantapa
icchā—desire; dveṣa—hate; samutthena—arising from; dvandva—duality; mohena—by the delusion; bhārata—O descendant of Bharata; sarva-bhūtāni—all living beings; sammoham—into delusion; sarge—at birth; yānti—go; parantapa—O conqueror of enemies.
“O conqueror of enemies, all beings are born into delusion, overcome by the dualities arising from desire and hatred.”
The human problem is identified precisely: it is not external circumstances but the internal pair of 'liking-disliking' (icchā-dveṣa) that generates the delusion of duality. Every moment of pleasure pulls us forward; every moment of pain pushes us away. This constant push-pull is saṁsāra experienced from the inside.
Observe the push-pull dynamic in your own mind throughout the day—how quickly you move toward what is pleasant and away from what is unpleasant. Simply noticing this movement, without acting on it immediately, creates a space of freedom. That space is the beginning of liberation.
