Bhagavad Gita 3.28

Verse 28

तत्त्ववित्तु महाबाहो गुणकर्मविभागयोः | गुणा गुणेषु वर्तन्त इति मत्वा न सज्जते || २८ ||

Transliteration

tattva-vit tu mahā-bāho guṇa-karma-vibhāgayoḥ guṇā guṇeṣu vartanta iti matvā na sajjate

Synonyms

tattva-vit—the knower of the Absolute Truth; tu—but; mahā-bāho—O mighty-armed one; guṇa-karma—of qualities and action; vibhāgayoḥ—in terms of division; guṇāḥ—the qualities; guṇeṣu—in the qualities; vartante—act; iti—thus; matvā—knowing; na—never; sajjate—becomes attached.

Translation

But one who knows the truth about the division between the self and the gunas, O mighty-armed one, knowing that the gunas merely interact with other gunas, is not attached.

Multi-Tradition Commentary

Swami Chinmayananda

The tattva-vit — one who knows the truth — understands that the entire drama of action is the play of gunas upon gunas. Senses (gunas) contact sense objects (also gunas) and generate reactions — all within Prakriti. The true Self stands apart, uninvolved. This knowledge is not merely philosophical: it transforms the experiential relationship with action, freeing one from the compulsion of reactive behaviour.

Practical Application (Modern Life)

When you react strongly to a situation — with anger, fear, or craving — practice pausing and internally noting: 'This is a guna-reaction, not my essential nature.' This brief moment of witnessing, even if imperfect, begins to create the experiential gap between the True Self and its coverings. Over time, this gap becomes liberation.
