What is Tejas?

तेजस् (Tejas)Radiance / Fire

The subtle essence of digestion, intelligence, and transformation that manifests as charisma, mental clarity, and spiritual fire.

Deep Understanding

While Ojas provides stability and grounding, Tejas provides fire, courage, and cutting intelligence. It is the refined energetic essence of the fire element (Agni) in the body. A person with high Tejas possesses a penetrating, sharp intellect, strong digestion, and a radiant, magnetic presence. They digest not only food efficiently, but also thoughts, experiences, and complex philosophical concepts. Too little Tejas results in dullness and lethargy; too much, unchecked by Ojas, leads to burnout, anger, and arrogant fanaticism.

A crucial concept in Ayurveda and Tantra. It explains why some yogis possess an intimidating, radiant power that commands attention. Tejas is the energetic fuel required to burn through deep-seated ignorance (Avidya).

Core Principles

  • 1Tejas is the fire of intelligence that makes discernment (Viveka) possible
  • 2It is built through disciplines like fasting, intense focus, and austerity (Tapas)
  • 3It gives speeches and arguments their magnetic power to persuade
  • 4A healthy spiritual system balances the cooling stability of Ojas with the heating fire of Tejas

In Practice

Observe how you process information. If you feel mentally sluggish and unable to quickly grasp complex ideas, your mental 'fire' is low. Cultivate Tejas by digesting simpler things fully—focusing completely on one task at a time without distraction, and practicing moderate physical disciplines.
