What is Saṃskāra?
संस्कार (Saṃskāra) — Impression / Subconscious Groove
Deep Understanding
If you walk through a tall field of grass, you leave a faint trail. Walk that trail every day for a year, and you create a deep, packed dirt path. Water will naturally flow down that path. In yogic psychology, every thought and action leaves a trail in the subconscious mind (Chitta). This is a Samskara. When you react with anger to a specific trigger, you deepen the anger-groove. The next time the trigger happens, your mind flows down the path of least resistance—anger. We are not free agents; we are massive bundles of accumulated Samskaras, acting out scripts written by our past. Liberation means deliberately paving over the old toxic grooves and carving new ones.
The mechanism behind Karma. Karma is not a cosmic ledger kept by a judge in the sky. It is the literal architectural wiring of your own brain based on your past choices. Samskaras are the code that executes the Karma.

- 2They survive physical death and are carried into the next life
- 3Meditation works by creating a new, overriding Samskara of extreme stillness
- 4It is easier to create a positive groove than to fight a negative one
In Practice
You cannot simply decide to 'stop being angry.' Your Samskaras are too strong. When you feel the habitual groove activating, you must physically interrupt the circuit. Take three deep breaths, walk out of the room, or splash cold water on your face. Every time you refuse to walk down the old dirt path, the grass begins to grow back.
