What is Prakṛti?
प्रकृति (Prakṛti) — Primal Nature / Matter
Deep Understanding
In the Samkhya framework, everything that is not pure consciousness (Purusha) is Prakriti. This includes not just rocks, trees, and flesh, but also the most refined, subtle human intellect, memory, and ego. Prakriti is blind, intelligent, unfolding, and relentless. It is composed of three intertwined strands (Gunas): Sattva (balance and light), Rajas (motion and passion), and Tamas (inertia and darkness). When these three forces lose their equilibrium, the entire universe explodes into manifestation. Prakriti dances, evolves, and suffers entirely for the benefit and eventual liberation of the witnessing Purusha.
The feminine, material, active half of the Samkhya dualism, heavily adapted by the Bhagavad Gita and Ayurveda. It stands in contrast to the masculine, motionless Purusha.
Core Principles
- 1It is the sole active agent in the universe; consciousness does nothing but watch
- 2Prakriti creates the mind, the ego, and the senses
- 3It is profoundly intelligent, evolving specifically to provide experience to the soul
- 4Once the soul achieves realization, Prakriti packs up her dance and ceases to bind that individual
In Practice
Stop taking your shifting moods and intrusive thoughts so personally. It is just Prakriti doing what Prakriti does—spinning the wheel of Gunas. Sometimes it is heavy (Tamas), sometimes chaotic (Rajas). You cannot stop the weather of your own mind by shouting at it. Just wait. Let the storm pass. You are the sky, not the weather.
