Deep Understanding
The Taittiriya Upanishad introduces a map of human identity that is radically more precise than the Western 'mind/body' split. It proposes five layers: the physical body made of food (Annamaya), the energy body made of breath (Pranamaya), the mental body of everyday thoughts (Manomaya), the wisdom body of deep intuition (Vijnanamaya), and the bliss body (Anandamaya). The spiritual path is essentially a process of realizing you are not the outer coats you are wearing, peeling back the layers until you find the wearer.
The Kosha model is fundamental to Vedanta and Yoga therapy. It provides a structural framework for understanding disease (often originating in the subtle sheaths and manifesting in the physical) and for designing comprehensive spiritual practices.

In Practice
When experiencing discomfort, map it. Is it physical hunger (Annamaya)? Low energy (Pranamaya)? Intrusive anxious thoughts (Manomaya)? Or an existential crisis of purpose (Vijnanamaya)? Address the problem at its specific layer rather than using the wrong tool.
