न कर्तृत्वं न कर्माणि लोकस्य सृजति प्रभुः | न कर्मफलसंयोगं स्वभावस्तु प्रवर्तते || १४ ||
na kartṛtvaṃ na karmāṇi lokasya sṛjati prabhuḥ na karma-phala-saṃyogaṃ svabhāvas tu pravartate
na—never; kartṛtvam—proprietorship; na—nor; karmāṇi—activities; lokasya—of the people; sṛjati—creates; prabhuḥ—the Lord of the body (soul); na—nor; karma-phala—results of activities; saṃyogam—connection; svabhāvaḥ—the modes of material nature; tu—but; pravartate—acts.
“The Self does not create the sense of agency, nor actions, nor the union of action with its results. It is nature (svabhava) that operates.”
The Atman, the pure Self, is not the actual agent of any action. It does not create the ego's sense of doership, the actions themselves, or the causal connection between actions and their fruits. All this belongs to Prakriti — the field of nature operating through the gunas. The Self is the light by which all this activity is illumined, but it is not itself active. Confusing the illuminating witness with the acted-upon field is the root ignorance.
The deep teaching here is that your essential nature is already free — it never was the doer. When you feel the weight of 'I must fix everything, I must succeed, I am responsible for all outcomes,' pause and remember: the Self is the light, not the machine. This recognition itself is liberating.
