क्षेत्रज्ञं चापि मां विद्धि सर्वक्षेत्रेषु भारत | क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञयोर्ज्ञानं यत्तज्ज्ञानं मतं मम || ३ ||
kṣetra-jñaṁ cāpi māṁ viddhi sarva-kṣetreṣu bhārata kṣetra-kṣetrajñayor jñānaṁ yat taj jñānaṁ mataṁ mama
kṣetra-jñam—the knower of the field; ca—also; api—certainly; mām—Me; viddhi—know; sarva-kṣetreṣu—in all fields; bhārata—O son of Bharata; kṣetra—the field; kṣetrajñayoḥ—and the knower of the field; jñānam—knowledge; yat—which; tat—that; jñānam—knowledge; matam—opinion; mama—My.
“And know Me as the Kshetrajna (Knower of the Field) in all fields, O Bharata. Knowledge of the Field and the Knower of the Field — that, I hold, is true knowledge.”
This is the pivotal declaration of the chapter. 'Know Me as the Kshetrajna in all fields' — the Lord declares Himself to be the inner Knower in every body, every being. Ramanuja interprets this as the Lord being the inner Self (antaryami) who dwells within all individual selves, knowing through them yet infinitely transcending them. True knowledge (jnanam) consists precisely in understanding both the field (what is experienced) and the Knower (who experiences), and their relationship.
The recognition that the same witness-awareness that knows in you also knows in every other person is the foundation of genuine compassion. When you see another person, they too have an inner Kshetrajna — the same awareness. This recognition dissolves the root of unkindness, which is the belief in a fundamental division between self and other.
