Path vs Path

Shaiva Siddhanta vs Kashmir Shaivism

TL;DR Summary

Shaiva Siddhanta (South) is primarily dualistic: God (Pati), souls (Pashu), and the world (Pasha) are all eternally real and distinct. Kashmir Shaivism (North) is strictly non-dual: Everything is Shiva, and there is no real difference between the Lord and the soul.

The Two Peaks of Shiva's Wisdom

Shaivism, the devotion to Shiva, has produced two of the world's most sophisticated philosophical systems—one from the far south of India (Shaiva Siddhanta) and one from the far north (Kashmir Shaivism). While they both worship the same deity, their understanding of the relationship between God and the individual is strikingly different.

Shaiva Siddhanta: The Southern School of Relationship

Mainly found in Tamil Nadu, Shaiva Siddhanta is a path of devoted relationship. It posits three eternal realities:

  1. Pati: Shiva, the Lord, the efficient cause of the universe.
  2. Pashu: The soul, eternally existing but bound by ignorance.
  3. Pasha: The bonds (Karma, Maya, and Ego) that keep the soul trapped.

For the Siddhantin, the soul never becomes Shiva. It matures through devotion and grace until it attains a state of eternal union with Shiva, much like a fruit is on a tree but is not the tree itself. It is a path of "Dualistic-Non-dualism" where the soul and God are "not-two" in union, but "two" in existence.

Kashmir Shaivism: The Northern School of Recognition

Developed in the Himalayas between the 8th and 12th centuries, Kashmir Shaivism (Trika) is one of the most radical non-dual philosophies ever written. Its core claim: Pratyabhijna or "Recognition."

You are not a soul trying to find Shiva. You are Shiva, who has voluntarily limited his power and knowledge to play the game of being a person. Liberation is not something you achieve; it is a sudden "recognition" of your own nature as the infinite consciousness that is even now dancing this universe into existence.

Which Resonates With You?

If you feel a deep, prayerful love for God as a separate, merciful Lord—if you want to be a devotee forever—the rich rituals and devotional hymns of Shaiva Siddhanta will feel like home.

If you have an expansive, mystical bent—if you find that in deep meditation, all boundaries between "me" and "universe" dissolve—Kashmir Shaivism offers the most powerful intellectual framework for that experience of infinite unity.
